If sensitive teeth, scraping or the sounds associated with a professional clean make you nervous, our new EMS AIRFLOW in Geelong offers another approach. At Aberdeen Dental Care, we have introduced EMS Airflow technology to help me remove plaque, biofilm and some surface staining using a controlled stream of warm water, air and fine powder. As a dental hygienist, I’m excited to be able to use this technology as part of our preventive dental care.

What is EMS Airflow?

EMS AIRFLOW is Swiss-made dental technology designed for professional dental cleaning. Instead of relying solely on traditional polishing and scaling methods, the AIRFLOW system directs a controlled combination of air, warm water and fine powder onto the teeth. This helps remove plaque, biofilm and certain surface stains, including from areas that can be difficult to reach.

One feature I particularly like is the use of warmed water. The EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master can deliver water heated to around 40°C. For people with sensitive teeth who find cold water uncomfortable during a clean, this can make a real difference to their experience.

The system can also reduce how much conventional scaling is required in some appointments. If you have hard calculus or tartar, however, an ultrasonic scaler or other instruments may still be needed. EMS Airflow doesn’t eliminate the need for these tools in every case. Instead, it gives me another useful option that I can incorporate into your individual hygiene care.

How EMS Airflow in Geelong supports preventive dental care

One of the main things we focus on during dental hygiene appointments is biofilm. Dental biofilm is a community of microorganisms that forms on the surfaces in your mouth. If it isn’t effectively managed, plaque accumulation can contribute to problems such as gingivitis and periodontal disease.

EMS Airflow is designed to remove this biofilm from tooth surfaces and other areas of the mouth as part of professional preventive care.

For me, though, good dental hygiene isn’t simply about what happens while you’re sitting in the chair. Helping you understand your mouth and how to look after it between appointments is just as important.

Depending on your individual needs, biofilm can be displayed during treatment using a coloured dye. This makes areas of build-up visible and can show you where you may need to pay a little more attention when cleaning at home.

It turns your appointment into an opportunity not only to have your teeth professionally cleaned, but also to better understand your own oral hygiene.

A more comfortable experience for sensitive or nervous patients

I know that having your teeth professionally cleaned isn’t everyone’s favourite appointment. That’s one of the reasons I’m pleased we’ve introduced EMS Airflow at Aberdeen Dental Care.

Every mouth is different, so I will always assess what is appropriate for your teeth and gums rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. My aim is to make your appointment thorough while helping you feel as comfortable and informed as possible.

Combining modern equipment with professional care

New dental equipment is exciting, but technology works best when it’s combined with professional knowledge and individual care.

I graduated from La Trobe University in 2015 with a degree in Oral Health, and my role at Aberdeen Dental Care is centred on helping patients care for their teeth and gums over the long term.

Aberdeen Dental Care has a strong focus on preventive dentistry, including regular examinations, professional cleaning and practical oral hygiene advice. The practice also invests in contemporary dental technology and equipment to support patient care.

Ready to try a gentler approach to dental cleaning?

If you’ve been putting off a professional clean because you have sensitive teeth, dislike the scraping sensation or simply feel nervous about dental appointments, EMS AIRFLOW may offer a more comfortable approach.

I’m looking forward to introducing more of our patients to this technology and helping make regular dental hygiene appointments a more positive experience.
